Memorial Cup to Showcase Top Prospects
May 16th, 2013
The 2013 Memorial Cup which gets underway May 17 in Saskatoon promises to showcase some of the Canadian Hockey League's best draft eligible prospects.
In a nutshell, the ten day gala will be every pro scout's dream.
Seth Jones, who's projected to go first overall to the Colorado Avalanche at the 2013 NHL Draft suits up for the Portland Winterhawks. He'll be up against the likes of Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin when the Portland meets the Halifax Mooseheads on May 18.
The 96th edition of the Canadian Hockey League's biggest showcase, will give scouts one last chance to put the prospects under the microscope. Only two prospects have played in the Cup over the last decade, before they went No. 1 overall: Edmonton's Taylor Hall in 2010 (played with Windsor in Brandon) and Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby in 2005 (played with Rimouski in London).
Bo Horvat, Max Domi and Nikita Zadorov, the top three London Knights' prospects also join the party. The Knights are the only team from the 2012 edition in Shawinigan to compete in the 2013 tournament.
The top goalie prospect in 2013 Zachary Fucale? He's in net with the Mooseheads.
While the host Saskatoon Blades don't feature any top 30 prospects from the lastest ISS rankings, they'll be eager to show they belong with the big guys. The Blades were swept by the Medicine Hat Tigers in the first round of the WHL playoffs, and will play their first game in 51 games Friday evening in the tournament opener.
