Michael MCCarron to Play in London
July 11th, 2013
Michael McCarron has made it official.
He will wear the London Knights green and gold next season, officially choosing the Knights over the NCAA Western Michigan Broncos.
The Macomb, MI native was taken 25th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2013 NHL Draft. The Canadiens made the announcement on where McCarron was going to play after a Wednesday night conference call with the family.
McCarron signed a three year entry level deal with the Canadiens, giving up his NCAA eligibility. He was a sixth-round pick by the Belleville Bulls in the 2011 OHL draft but electd to play with the U.S. National Development Program.
The Knights obtained McCarron's OHL rights in a trade with the Bulls in 2012.
McCarron joins a long list of players the Knights have managed to entice away from the NCAA. Last year alone the Knights managed to get Dakota Mermis, Anthony Stolarz and Alex Broadhurst.
This was a more difficult sell because Western Michigan is coached by former Los Angeles Kings and St. Louis Blues head coach Andy Murray and he’s a highly respected coach. Last season, Western Michigan had Red Wings’ defenseman Danny DeKeyser on their team and he developed into an NHL player under Murray.
But the Knights coach Dale Hunter has also put a lot of players in the NHL.
A big selling point was the fact OHL mirrors the NHL when it comes to length of schedule. With the Knights hosting the Memorial Cup tournament in May any substantial playoff run will guarantee McCarron upwards of 80 games.
