London on the brink of elimination
May 8th, 2013
BARRIE - They had it in their hands after two periods. And then it all went sour.
Mark Scheifele and the Barrie Colts dominated the third period at the Molson Centre to put the Colts on the brink of lifting the J. Ross Robertson Cup, beating the London Knights 6-4 Wednesday evening.
Barrie began game four much like game three. Anthony Camara put his side up after just 37 seconds, but the Knights would dominate that period from that point on. Tyler Ferry and Bo Horvat beat Mathias Niederberger, Brett Welychka would do the same at the 2:46 mark in the second period and the Knights led after 40 minutes of hockey.
The team in green and gold looked very comfortable.
Mark Scheifele had other ideas.
The Winnipeg Jets prospect scored four times, including thrice in the first eight minutes of the third, completely changing the outcome of the game. He would add an empty netter late on, giving him ten points (6G,4A) in the last two games of the series.
London goalie Anthony Stolarz wasn't at his immaculate best on the night. He faced 25 shots in total, and stopped 20. His counterpart, overage German Niederberger faced 33 and stopped 29.
The Knights were so dominant initially, they outshot the Colts 23-10 through two periods.
The defending OHL champions last faced elimination on April 3, 2011, when top seed Owen Sound Attack beat them in game six of their first round series. The Attack would go on to lift the OHL trophy for the first time in their history that season.
During the post game press conference, head coach Dale Hunter accused the Colts of diving; beginning during the last few minutes of the second period. His rant seemed to be aimed at taking pressure off his team as both teams prepare for Friday's must win game on home ice.
Barrie’s head coach Dale Hawerchuck responded to Hunter's allegations by saying his team did what they had to do, adding that diving is not in thier mandate.
The Knights' are no strangers to adversity. And if history (or the Eastern Conference final, where the Belleville Bulls came back from 3-1 down to force a game seven against Barrie) is anything to go by, this series is far from over.
Puck drop Friday from the Budweiser Gardens is 7:05 pm.
