knights present bid to host the 2014 memorial cup
Apr 16th, 2013
The London Knights bid for the 2014 Memorial Cup will officially be presented in front of the Site Selection Committee tomorrow, April 17, in Toronto. The Knights, along with the Barrie Colts and the Windsor Spitfires are the three teams vying to host the CHL's marquee event next year between May 16-25.
The Site Selection Committee is comprised of five leaders in the sports industry including Toronto Blue Jays President and CEO Paul Beeston, former OHL and NHL Executive and Director of Central Scouting Frank Bonello, NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell, NHL Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Jim Gregory, and President of Broadcast, Rogers Media (Sportsnet) Scott Moore. Ex officio members of the Site Selection Committee include OHL Legal Counsel Gord Kirke, and OHL Commissioner David Branch.
The Knights are believed to be the favourites to host the event in 2014, despite having hosted and won the tournament back in 2005. The Barrie Colts have never hosted the Memorial Cup despite bidding for it on a number of occasions. The Knights return much of their team from this season, the Colts do the same despite losing Mark Schiefele and goalie Mathias Niederberger.
The Windsor Spitfires remain the dark horse in the bid, having missed the playoffs in 2013. The OHL also imposed fines on the Spitfires for breaching player recruitment rules so whether or not the Spitfires are awarded the Memorial Cup remains to be seen.
The Knights’ five-man presentation team will include GM Mark Hunter, Governon Trevor Whiffen, Tourism London GM John Winston, 2008 world under-17 Hockey Challenge chair and 2005 financial director Joe O’Neill and Budweiser Gardens GM Brian Ohl.
