Knights force a game seven
May 11th, 2013
BARRIE - Ryan Rupert scored 1:30 into overtime, as the London Knights beat the Barrie Colts 5-4 in a must win game 6 for the Knights. Brett Welychka opened the scoring in the first period, as the Knights would race to a 4-0 lead after two periods.
Tommy Hughes was an unlikely goal scorer, shooting from the Knights' blue line. Bo Horvat and Ryan Rupert rounded out the scoring for London.
Andreas Athanaisou opened the scoring in the third, Erik Bradford and Mitchell Theoret scored 25 seconds apart, sparking a spirited Barrie comeback, that would culminate with another Theoret goal, sparking scenes of jubilation amonst the 4,142 faithful inside the Molson Centre.
For the second straight game, Barrie head coach Dale Hawerchuk yanked his starter Mathias Niederberger, giving way for youngster Alex Fotinos to play the third period. Niederberger faced 22 shots through 40 minutes of play, stopping 18.
In London's net, Jake Patterson made his second start in two days, stopping 23 of 27. The draft eligible Patterson was solid in net, right from the start, and couldn't do much for all of Barrie's goals. Chris Tierney's leg played hero, saving a sure Barrie goal in the third period when Patterson was trapped in behind the net.
The Colts had two chances to kill of the defending champions. The Knights survived by the skin of their teeth on both occassions. Much like the OHL Eastern Conference final, the Colts will be kicking themselves after countless missed opportunities.
Had the Colts won, the arena would have erupted. Instead, it emptied within minutes save a few London fans who made the trip.
It's now do or die for both these teams as the series shifts for one last time to the Budweiser Gardens in London.
Game 7 goes down Monday night at 7:35.
