fanshawe college to house volleyball centre of excellence
Jul 8th, 2013
Fanshawe College is in the mix to churn out the newest crop of elite volleyball players.
This comes after Volleyball Canada announced that Fanshawe will be home to a Centre of Excellence, that officially opens its doors in September.
The primary focus would be individual skill development, as athletes in grades 8 to 12, will be eligible to attend this centre. Prospective athletes would be identified following an identification session, the next one taking place on Wednesday (June 10)
"That [individual skill development] is something that Volleyball Canada has identified as a weakness in their system," said Fanshawe's Manager of Athletics, Nathan McFadden. "So that's what they've created with these centres of excellence is a training facility for individual excellence."
The eventual goal of these centres, of which there are now five in Ontario, will be providing the national teams with elite athletes.
And on the plus side, it's a win-win for both sides involved. The college will be exposed to the stars of tomorrow, potentially looking at some future recruits for the volleyball programs.
The Centre will be managed by Fanshawe's volleyball coaches and will involve on court time as well as strength training, video analysis, nutrition, psychology and athlete development programs.
“We are excited to open our newest VCCE in London," said Dawna Sales, Program Manager of Volleyball Canada Centre of Excellence. "To ensure excellence in athlete development, key partnerships with elite level coaches and quality facilities are a top priority. We look forward to working with Fanshawe College to build a Centre of Excellence in this region.”
There is room for development and growth at Fanshawe as well. For now McFadden says they're looking at a limited number of participants to gauge the success of the centre, but he adds "they're open to not saying no to a few extra athletes."
Once selected athletes will attend two training sessions a week; either on Wednesday or Friday mornings and Sunday mornings.
London joins Toronto, Hamilton, Waterloo and Ottawa as other centre locations in Ontario.
